Amigurumi Peace Hippo Free Crochet Patterns

You will need

• DMC Happy Chenille yarn (100% polyester, 15 g/38 m)
Gray (x2 balls) – Red – Pink – Yellow – Green – Blue – Purple
• 3 or 3.5 mm crochet hook
• a pair of 9 mm safety eyes for each hippo
• black embroidery thread
• tapestry needle
• pink sewing thread and needle (used only for the skirt)
• dressmaker pins
• stitch markers
• toy stuffing

Head and Body

With gray yarn
Rnd 1: ch7, skip the first ch from hook, 5sc, 5sc in last ch, continue working on the other side of the foundation ch, 4sc, 4sc in last st [18]
Rnd 2: (6sc, inc 3 times) repeat 2 times (24)
Rnd 3: 6sc, (inc, Isc) repeat 3 times, 6sc, (inc, 1sc) repeat 3 times [30]
Rnd 4-8 (5 rounds): sc in all sts [30] Insert safety eyes between rounds 6 and 7, approx 9 stitches apart, parallel to the starting chain .
Rnd 9: (inc, 9sc) repeat 3 times [33]
Rnd 10: (5sc, inc, 5sc) repeat 3 times (36)
Rnd 11: (inc, llsc) repeat 3 times [39]

Rnd 13-21 (9 rounds): sc in all sts [42]
Rnd 22: (dec, 5sc) repeat 6 times [36]

Rnd 25: (dec, 2sc) repeat 6 times [18] Add toy stuffing to head and body a little bit at time. Do not overstuff to keep the softness of the chenille!

Muzzle

With gray yarn.
Rnd 1: ch4, skip the first ch from hook, 2sc, 5sc in last ch, continue working on the opposite side of the foundation ch, 1sc, 4sc in last st [12]
Rnd 2: (3sc, inc 3 times) repeat 2 times [18]
Rnd 3-4 2 rounds: sc in all sts (18) Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
Sew the muzzle between rounds 5 and 9 of the head, between the eyes. Use a tail of black thread to stitch nostrils and mouth .

Ears (Make 2)

with gray yarn.
Rnd 1: ch2, skip the first ch from hook, work all the stitches in next ch: 1sc, 2dc, 2sc, slst in first st of the round [5]
Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn for sewing the ears to the body, either side of round 2 .

Arms (Make 2)

with gray yarn.
Rnd 1: ch2, skip the first ch from hook, 6sc in next ch [6]
Rnd 2-6 (5 rounds): sc in all sts [6]
Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn for sewing. Do not stuff. Sew the arms between rounds 11 and 12 of the body, approx 15 stitches apart on the front

Legs (Make 2)

with gray yarn.
Rnd 1: ch2, skip the first ch from hook, 6sc in next ch (6)
Rnd 2: (inc, 2sc) repeat 2 times [8]
Rnd 3-6(4 rounds): sc in all sts [8]
Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn for sewing. Lightly stuff. Sew the legs to the bottom of the body.

Tail

With gray yarn.
Rnd 1: ch4, skip the first ch from hook, 3sc [3]
Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn for sewing.
Sew the tail to the back of the body . If you are going to make the dungarees, try them on the hippo before sewing the tail in place!

Peace Shirt

Start with red yarn, the shirt is worked from the top down. Yarn colors are indicated at the beginning of each round.
Ch36, sist in first ch to join the work in round.
Rnd 1: (red) 36sc [36]
Rnd 2: (pink) (5sc, inc) repeat 6 times [42]
Rnd 3: (yellow) (6sc, inc) repeat 6 times [48]
Rnd 4: (green) 10sc, 6ch, skip 6 st, 16sc, 6cat, skip 6 st, 10sc [48]
Rnd 5: (blue) 10sc, 6sc along the ch, 16sc, 6sc along the ch, 10sc [48]
Rnd 6: (purple) sc in all sts [48] Sist in next st.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Put on the shirt by slipping it over the head!
